Mosques on the Stamps
2020-12-31 Thu
A mosque is a worshipping place for Muslims. The architectural plan of the mosque is usually square or rectangular with an enclosed courtyard. Women pray in separate prayer hall called mail. Another important aspect is mihrab which is a semicircular niche in the wall of a mosque. The dome is placed above the main prayer hall. It signifies the vaults of heaven and sky. The shape of the dome resembles an onion. In olden days, Mosque played important roles in elementary education and advance training in religion. In recent times, they have preserved their role as places of religious instruction and debate. In Central Asia, Mosque was built over burial places of Sufi saints and later, it turned into pilgrimage places.
The five pillars of Islam to be practised by Muslims are Muslim life, prayer, concern for the needy, self-purification, and the Haj pilgrimage.
