Halley Research Station of Antarctica Stamp
2020-12-04 Fri
Halley Research Station is a research institute in Antarctica controlled by the British Antarctic Survey. On 22nd December 2005, British Antarctic Territory issued a stamp of Halley VI Research Station Design Competition. In 1985, the ozone hole is discovered from Halley. The topographic conditions throw a challenge of building on a floating ice shelf without being buried and crushed by snow.
The Halley Bay base was established in 1956. It was named after the astronomer Edmond Halley. In 2014, the station lost its electrical and heating supply during -55 °C recorded low temperature. This brought a suspension of meteorological observations essential for weather forecasting for the season.
During summer, the temperature rises up to -10 °C and during winter temperatures are below -20 °C with extreme lows of around -55 °C.
