Regina Mundi Day in South Africa
2020-11-30 Mon
Every year people in South Africa celebrate Regina Mundi Day on November 30. This holiday was established by President Nelson Mandela in 1997.Regina Mundi is the largest Roman Catholic Church in South Africa. It was built in Soweto and it became the centre of the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa. During the second half of the 20th-century political meetings were banned in most public places, but the government couldn't ban attending the church.
That is why Regina Mundi became the place, where people could safely meet and discuss. Nelson Mandela, as one of the most outstanding anti-apartheid activists, declared November 30 to be Regina Mundi Day.
Seychelles post issued a 5 Seychellois rupee stamp in the year 1962. The stamp depicts Regina Mundi Convent on the background with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth-II in an oval vignette on the right side of the stamp. The left side bears the denomination.
