Charles Dicken has created some of the best-known fictional characters. He is regarded as the greatest novelist of his time. He was left with no choice but to leave school and to work in a factory because his father was in debtor’s prison. Despite his hardship and lack of formal education, he edited a weekly journal for 20 years, wrote 15 novels, five novellas, hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles, lectured and performed readings at different occasions, was a tireless letter writer, and campaigned vigorously for children's rights, education, and other social reforms. His work was appreciated by Leo Tolstoy, George Orwell, G.K. Chesterton and Tom Wolfe for his realism, comedy, prose style, unique characterisation and social criticism. His notable works were The Pickwick Papers, Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby, A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, Bleak House, Little Dorrit, A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations. Botswana issued a stamp of Charles Dickens on his death anniversary. Visit philamart to view and purchase variety of stamps from all over the world.Image Courtesy: Stampsoftheworld.co.uk
