The Sacrifice of Vukovar at Croatia

The Battle of Vukovar was one of the major battles in the Croatian War of Independence. The battle was an 87-day siege that ended on November 18, 1991. Anniversary of the end of the siege is commemorated as Remembrance Day of the Sacrifice of Vukovar.The citizens of Vukovar managed to resist the Yugoslav People's Army, supported by the army of Serbia, for almost 3 months. They showed immense bravery, fighting the outnumbering enemy. The city of Vukovar fell on 18th November 1991.
Although Vukovar fell, the battle played an important role in the outcome of the war. The battle led to the rise of patriotism among the Croats, who finally won the war. Remembrance Day of the Sacrifice of Vukovar in 1991 became the symbol of Croatian identity and national freedom.
A 20 Kuna banknote of Croatia was issued by the Croatia Bank in the year 2001. The banknote depicts the portrait of Ban (ruler) of Croatia Josip Jelacic in Semi Profile on the obverse and The Eltz Manor in Vukovar and the Vucedol Dove on the reverse.
