2020-11-10 Tue
The historical visit of Pope Paul VI to Uganda was his first-ever visit to the African continent. The visit is remarkable because he visited only once to Africa in his entire 15 years reign.According to the sources, the then Archbishop of Kampala had gone to the Vatican to raise fund for Namugongo Shrine. Pope contributed a lot more than expected money. In return, he asked the Pope to come and lay the foundation stone.
Pope Paul VI was head of the Catholic Church from 21 June 1963 to his death in 1978. His original name was Giovanni Battista Enrico Antonio Maria Montini and was born at Castel Gandolfo, Italy. His predecessor was John XXIII and his successor was John Paul I.
