Day of the Dead in Mexico
2020-11-02 Mon
Day of the Dead also known as Dia de Los Muertos is a two-day holiday celebrated in Mexico and regions with the large Hispanic population on November 1 and 2. It coincides two Christian holidays, All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day. On this day, people worshiped the goddess known as the Lady of the Dead. Over the years, the image of the goddess transformed into La Calavera Catrina- a female skeleton that has become the icon of the Day of the Dead. Many Mexicans built private altars (ofrendas) for the deceased. These altars typically contain the favourite foods and beverages of the departed, sugars skulls, photos, memorabilia, and Mexican marigolds. It is also customary to visit cemeteries in order to clean and decorate the graves.
The stamp shown above is a 7 Dollars stamp issued in the year 2012. The stamp shows the tradition of the Day of the Dead. It depicts a decorated skull with marigold flowers and candles burning in the violet background.
