The last Shah of Iran Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who maintained a pro-Western foreign policy and fostered economic development in Iran, was born on 26th October 1919. The second and last monarch of the House of Pahlavi, he ruled Iran from 1941 until his overthrow in the Iranian Revolution 1979.Mohammad Reza was the eldest son of Reza Shah Pahlavi, an army officer who became the ruler of Iran and founder of the Pahlavi dynasty in 1925. Mohammad Reza was educated in Switzerland and returned to Iran in 1935.
Mohammad Reza took the title Shahanshah King of Kings. His dream of what he referred to as a "Great Civilisation" in Iran led to a rapid industrial and military modernisation, as well as economic and social reforms.
