Florence Nightingale and a staff of 38 nurses are sent to the Crimean War

Florence Nightingale, more famously known as the “The Lady with the Lamp” or “An Angel of Mercy” was an English social reformer and statistician, and the founder of modern nursing.Florence Nightingale came to prominence during the Crimean War where she served as the manager of the nurses tending to the wounded soldiers. She gave nursing a highly favourable reputation and became an icon of Victorian culture, famously known amongst her soldiers as "The Lady with the Lamp" making rounds of wounded soldiers at night.
After the conclusion of the Crimean War, she became an advocate for improved sanitation in the British military, and also of establishing nursing colleges to train professional nurses.
In 2010, the Florence Nightingale 5 Pounds gold coin was issued to commemorate 150 years of nursing. The obverse of a coin depicts Florence Nightingale holding the candle above sick man in hospital bed, dates and value; 1820-1910 FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE FIVE POUNDS. The reverse depicts the bust of Queen Elizabeth II with her name around it.
