Silver Dirham of Ghaznavids Sultanate Mahmud Gazanavi

The Ghaznavids were an Islamic dynasty of Turkish Mamluk origin. They ruled the large part of Iran, Afghanistan, much of Transoxiana, and the northwest Indian subcontinent. This dynasty was founded by Sabuktigin, after the death of his father-in-law Alp Tigin, who was an ex-general of the Samanid Empire from Balkh, north of the Hindu Kush in Greater Khorasan.This silver Dirham that weighs around 2.82g was issued by King Mahmud Gazanavi in the Hijri year 418 during his rule in the Ghaznavid Empire. The obverse of this coin is inscribed with the ‘ Kalima, name and titles of Mahmud in Kufic script. The reverse of this coin is inscribed as ‘Sharada script Avyaktamekam Muhammada Avtara Nripati Mahamuda’.
