The initial series of coins were issued in 1980 of denominations 1, 5 and 10 new agorot and IS ½. The 1 and 5 new agorot coins were made of aluminium, the 10 new agorot and the IS ½, 1, and 100 coins of cupronickel, the IS 5 and 50 coins of copper, aluminium, and nickel alloy and the IS 10 of cuprous-aluminium.

The 1 new agora coin depicts Palm tree and legends "Israel" in Hebrew and Arabic. And reverse show Value and Date. The metallic composition of the coin is 97% aluminium and 3% magnesium which are issued on 24th February 1980. It weighs 0.6 grams.

The palm branch was a symbol of peace, triumph and victory in ancient times. In Judaism, the palm represents peace and plenty. It is said that Prophet Muhammad had built his home out of palm. It is one of the widely known planted tree families found in tropical, subtropical and warm temperate climates.
