Panchala was an ancient kingdom of northern- India, today it is located in Ganga-Yamuna Doab of the upper Gangetic Plain. The Panchalas occupied the country to the east of the Kurus, between the upper Himalayas and the river Ganges. It was one of the most powerful states in the Indian subcontinent during the ancient period in India. During the ancient period, Panchala was closely allied with the Kuru Kingdom.We can get the reference of Panchala from the great Indian epic book Mahabharata. The word Panchala was the fusion of five (Pancha) Janas (tribes). In the ancient period, it was one of 16 Mahajanapadas in India.
