The Takayama Festivals aka Takayama Matsuri is the most celebrated festival in Japan. The festival is believed to be started by the Kanamori family in the 16/17th century. The Takayama Festival is celebrated twice a year once in spring and in autumn. The Autumn Festival is held on 9 and 10 October. The autumn festival is centred on the Sakurayama Hachiman Shrine and is referred to as the Hachiman Festival. It is held after the crops are harvested. The festivals are famous for the large ornate floats, or yatai, which roam around the city at night. The floats date back to the 17th century and are decorated with intricate carvings of gilded wood and detailed metal-work.
On 1st October 2009, the Japan Post issued a special commemorative stamp worth 50 Japanese Yen. The stamp depicts the beautifully lit Sakurayama Hachiman Shrine with people gathered around.
