Schein’s Mexican Beauty Book Wins an Award

2016-06-02 Thu

A 2014 book named Mexican Beauty, Un Peso Caballito, written by Author Allan Schein recently received the Mexican Numismatic Society’s Alberto Francisco Pradeau Award. The research and conclusions mentioned in the book has greatly helped improving the understanding of Mexican Numismatics. The book provides wonderful insights of the caballito along with many colour images. These one-peso issues were discovered by the author while he was researching some coins issued in 1914.

Popularly known as the “little horse”, this coin was first issued in 1910 and was withdrawn after five years. The coin was probably issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Mexican War of Independence. The reverse of the coins features a Liberty riding side-saddle on the horseback raising a torch and an oak branch in her hands. The obverse depicts a Mexican Eagle resting on a prickly-pear cactus, with a rattlesnake in its mouth and talons.

The book is available for purchase on Amazon.
