The Tibetan srang coin features the garden palace, victorious in all directions which were also the residence of the Dalai Lamas in the Drepung monastery and, in a wider sense, "Tibetan Government".The srang was a currency of Tibet between 1909 and 1959. It circulated alongside the tangka until the 1950s. It was divided into 10 shos, each of 10 skar, with the tangka equal to 15 skar. One srang was also equivalent to 6 and two-third of tangka.
Initially, srang was a weight unit of mass 37.5 grams. The srang first appeared as a silver coin in 1909.
The 1 srang coins of 18.5 g were struck between 1909 and 1919 from Dode mint. One and a half srang coins of 5 g were struck in Tapchi mint between 1936 and 1938 and again in 1946. 10 srang were issued from Dogu mint between 1948 and 1952. Gold coins of 20 srangs were struck in Ser-Khang mint between 1918 and 1921.
