Theoretical physicist who won a Nobel for codifying fundamental particles

Murray Gell-Mann, who transformed physics with his preternatural ability to find hidden patterns among the tiny particles that make up the universe, earning a Nobel Prize, born on 15th September 1929.Gell-Mann attended Columbia Prep and entered Yale at 15. He earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Yale in 1948, and a Ph.D. in physics from MIT in 1951. He was a postdoctoral research associate in 1951, and a visiting research professor at the University of Illinois from 1952 to 1953.
Gell-Mann won numerous awards and honors including Dannie Heineman Prize for Mathematical Physics, E. O. Lawrence Award, and John J. Carty Award. He received the 1969 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the theory of elementary particles. Republique De Guinee honored him on 750 F commemorative stamp issued 1984.
