The Bahamas Islands are home to different species of Whale. The most commonly found Whales are the Short-finned pilot whale, Killer whale, Dwarf sperm whale, Dense-beaked whale, Pygmy sperm whale, Sperm whale, and Blainville’s beaked whales. Sperm whales are the largest toothed whales in the world. During winter, male whales are often seen on the surface of the water. They come on the surface in search of receptive females for breeding purposes, the rest of the year they spend in higher latitude. The short-finned pilot whale is also known as blackfish or potheads grows up to 18 feet long and weighs around 5,000 pounds. A Dense-beaked whale is one of the rarest species found in the Bahamas with three beaked whales. Dense-beaked male whales consisted of the densest bone known on earth. Bahamas Postal service issued a special series of Whale stamps on the occasion of the silver jubilee of the ‘Bahamas Marine Mammal Research Organisation’. It features the Sperm whale [Physeter macrocephalus], Short-finned pilot whale [Globicephala macrorhynchus], Blainville’s beaked whales [Mesoplodon densirostris], and Dwarf sperm whale [Kogia simas].
