‘Hole in the Wall’ Lighthouse of Bahamas
2020-09-04 Fri
Lighthouse is a tower or tall structure built to emit light in order to serve as a navigational aid for maritime pilots at sea or on inland waterways. They were also helpful for aerial navigation. It is believed that the oldest lighthouse in the world is Patara at Antalya, Turkey which was built by Lycians in 60 CE.Before the development of the lighthouse technique, mariners were guided by fires built on hilltops. In initial phases, the lighthouse functioned more as an entrance marker to ports. Gradually, it became the warning signal for reefs and promontories.
‘Hole in the Wall’ lighthouse was built by the British Imperial Lighthouse Service in 1836. It was one of the oldest lighthouses in the Bahamas and was first in Abacos. Currently, the original mechanism of the lighthouse has been dismantled and it is now operated automatically without a lighthouse keeper.
