First Vietnamese Dong

The dong has been the currency of Vietnam since 1946. The word dong is from the term dong tien which means money. In 1946, the Viet Minh government (later to become the government of North Vietnam) introduced its own currency, the dong, to replace the French Indochinese piastre at par.With the success of the August 1945 Revolution, the birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam marked a new era, the era of independence, freedom, and democracy in the entire territory of Vietnam. On 1st December 1945, the Department of Treasury circulated 2 new copper coins and on 32st January 31 Vietnamese banknotes were issued.
A banknote of 100 dongs was born representing the independence and freedom of the Fatherland and the sacred sovereignty of the country in the picture of President Ho Chi Minh.
