Heroes' Day in Namibia
2020-08-26 Wed
August 26 is Heroes' Day in Namibia. Celebration of Heroes' Day was established to commemorate the first battle at Omugulugwombashe training camp that took place on 26th August 1966.The Namibians opposed this decision and refused to recognize the resolution. Then South West Africa People's Organization started preparation for armed resistance. Several training camps were built, one of them was Omugulugwombashe.
Though the camp was not prepared to start training, the helicopters of the South African Defense Force attacked the camp at Omugulugwombashe on 26th August. This event was the first armed battle of the war.
The above banknote above commemorates one of the national heroes of Namibia. Issued in the year 2012, this 50 Dollars banknote depicts Portrait of the king of the Namaqua people, a subtribe of the Khoikhoi, Kaptein Hendrik Witbooi with Parliament building in Windhoek behind him.
