Mikhail Gorbachev was the general secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) from 1985 to 1991 and president of the Soviet Union in 1990–91. He became the first president of the Soviet Union in 1990 and won the Nobel Prize for Peace that same year.Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev was born on March 2, 1931, family in the village of Privolnoye to a Russian-Ukrainian. His efforts to democratize his country’s political system and decentralize its economy led to the downfall of communism and the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991.
He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace for his leadership role in ending the Cold War and promoting peaceful international relations. He has been featured on many stamps by different countries. The 100 Guyanese stamps were issued by Guyana in 1993 in the series of famous people of the 20th century.
