German Post's New Wedding Issue

2016-05-30 Mon

A new and unique stamp has been issued by German post celebrating German Wedding traditions which are unique and different from rest of the Europe.

The ceremony of marriage in Germany is very fascinating and distinctive. First of all, unlike other European Wedding, traditional German wedding is celebrated for three days.

On the first day the couple is married by Justice of Peace. It takes place one week or one day before the church ceremony and is attended only by the closest family members and friends.

The second day is known as Polterabend ? “the evening with lots of broken porcelain”. Friends and relatives bring old porcelain and kitchenware to smash in front of the bride and groom. The broken pieces are thought to grant them a happy, lucky life.

On the third day the religious ceremony and reception takes place. The bride typically wears a white gown and carries salt and bread as an omen of good harvest. The groom wears a black tuxedo and carries grain for good luck and wealth.

To commemorate and to describe the happiest event of everybody’s life, German Post has issued a new stamp which is as unique as their wedding traditions. The stamp shows an eye-catching combination of lavender and red and features two pairs of footwear – one for the groom and other for the bride – with “Ja (I Do)” – the word of oath at the bottom.
