Remembering Indian Freedom Fighter Kaka Saheb Kalelkar

Dattatreya Balkrishna Kalelkar popularly known as Kaka Kalelkar was at Satara in Maharashtra on 1st December 1885. He was an Indian independence activist, social reformer, journalist and an eminent follower of the philosophy and methods of Mahatma Gandhi.Kalelkar’s father was a highly respected treasury officer in the British Government. At the age of 17, Kaka Saheb passed his matriculation and joined Fergusson College at Poona from where he took a B.A. degree in Philosophy. He came in touch with secret political societies and began his secret revolutionary work in 1906. During those days he is deeply influenced by the writings of Swami Vivekananda and Lokmanya Tilak.
He traveled to the Himalayas by foot and later joined Acharya Kripalani on a visit to Burma (Myanmar) in 1913. He first met Mahatma Gandhi in 1915 and became a member of Sabarmati Ashram. He was appointed as a member of Rajya Sabha from 1952 to 1964 and later appointed as president of the Backward Classes Commission in 1953.
