450th Anniversary of Malta’s Capital City - Valletta Celebrated on Coins

The 450th anniversary of the foundation of Malta’s capital city, Valletta was celebrated by the Central Bank of Malta with the release of a special silver proof quality commemorative €10 coin on 27th May 2016. Mintage of this Royal Dutch Mint coin is limited just to 3,000 pieces.

The reverse depicts architect Francesco Laparelli and his assistant Gerolamo Cassar involved in a discussion with Grand Master Jean de Valette about the building of the new fortified city of Valletta. The foundation stone was laid by Grand Master Jean de Valette on 28th March 1566. In 1571 Grand Master Pietro del Monte moved its quarters from Birgu to Valletta which then became Malta’s capital. In 1980, Valletta was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO for its wonderful architecture. The coin’s obverse features the coat of arms of Malta with the inscription ‘2016’.
