Gold solidus of Constantius II, celebrating the 15th year of his reign
2020-08-11 Tue
Constantius II was a Roman emperor from 337 to 361. His reign saw constant warfare on the borders against the Sasanian Empire and Germanic peoples, while internally the Roman Empire went through repeated civil wars and usurpations. His religious policies inflamed domestic conflicts that would continue after his death. As emperor, Constantius promoted Arian Christianity, persecuted pagans by banning sacrifices and closing pagan temples, and issued laws discriminating against Jews. His military campaigns against Germanic tribes were successful: he defeated the Alamanni in 354 and campaigned across the Danube against the Quadi and Sarmatians in 357.
Depicted here is a Gold solidus of Constantius II, celebrating the 15th year of his reign. It depicts the Pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust on the obverse face. The reverse of a coin illustrates Victoria seated right on cuirass, inscribing VOT/XV/MVLT/XX in four lines on shield resting on the knee and supported by a small genius.
