Half-Rupee Nazarana of Independent Kingdom Cooch Behar

This half-rupee nazarana rupee was issued from Independent Kingdom Cooch Behar. Cooch Behar was the most powerful Independent Kingdom during the medieval period in India. During the ancient period, Cooch Behar was also known as Pragjyotisha, which is mentioned in the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. In the later period, the western part of Pragjyotisha came to be known as Kamarupa, which had remained under the suzerainty of the Guptas and Palas for some time.The first ruler of the Cooch Dynasty was Biswa Singha who ruled Cooch Behar from 1510 CE to 1530 CE. Biswa Singha was succeeded by his son Nara Narayan, who is also known with the name of Mallanarayan.
This half –rupee nazarana was issued by king Shivendra Narayan from Independent Kingdom Cooch Behar. The weight of this coin is around 4.6g. The obverse of this coin is inscribed as Sri Sri/ Siva Charana/ Kamala Madhu/ Karasya. The reverse of this coin is inscribed as ‘Sri Si/ Shivendra/ Narayana/ Bhup’.
