Canada Mint features Matriarch Moon Mask

For centuries masks have played an important role in traditional ceremonies of native Canadians. Royal Canadian Mint has transferred them to at least two commemorative coins. The coin depicts the original wood carving of the Haida Artist Mask!The Haida Indians are original people of the Pacific Northwest Coast. Coin honors women and their roles as leaders, sages, and guardians of their clan’s history. The Haida were a seafaring people, skilled fishers and hunters who were located in the archipelago of Haida Gwaii. The Haida were expert woodcarvers and various items were decorated with Haida art. These included fabulous masks.
This coin is 99.99% pure silver and gold. The coin has managed to reproduce a wooden carving by Haida artist Carol Young. It honors women and their roles as leaders, sages, and guardians of their clan’s history. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
