Silver Drachma of Gupta Emperor Skandagupta
2020-07-31 Fri
Skandagupta was a Gupta Empire Emperor of Nothern India; the reign of Skandagupta is a striking period in the history of ancient India, probably, because of the Hun invasion. His Bhitari pillar inscription suggests that he restored the Gupta power by defeating his enemies, who may have been rebels or foreign invaders. We can find the reference of the Huns invasion in the 8th stanza of the Bhitari Pillar inscription. The most formidable war of Skandagupta in his reign was against the Huns, for which he is legendary. However, since the inscriptions do not provide any valid date of the invasion, there are enough controversies regarding the time of the Hun assault! This silver Drachma which weighs around 1.56g was issued by Skandagupta during his reign in Gupta Empire. The obverse of this coin depicts a bust of the king facing toward the right. The reverse of this coin depicts a fire altar with Brahmi legend around.
