Maharathis of Tungabhadra Valley

After the collapse of the Mauryan Empire in the second century BC, the local administrative officers who are also called as Maharathis, Mahatalavara and Mahasenapati built up their kingdom started issuing coins in their name. The Maharathis can be considered as the earliest known ruler of the Deccan. They were succeeded by Korea, Ananda, Hasti, Mahatalavara, Sada, Sebaka families in the Deccan.This lead unit was issued from Maharathis of Tungabhadra Valley. The obverse of this coin depicts the standing elephant facing towards left with Brahmi legend around. The reverse of this coin depicts Tree-in railing with nine compartments.
