The East India Company Bullion Ltd. and the treasury of St. Helena released, on 17th July 2019, their new “Tiger” silver one-ounce Proof-quality cash coin. The bold Tiger coin celebrates India’s national animal and highlights the fact that the tiger is one of the world’s most endangered species. As the national animal of India, the tiger occupies a prominent position and meaning in Indian culture. For centuries it has been a symbol of power, strength, and grace, and is also closely associated with bravery and valor. In Hindu mythology, this majestic animal symbolizes the possession of unlimited power. The Goddess Durga Bhagwati, or the Divine Mother, rides a tiger to demonstrate her power to protect virtue and destroy evil.
Bengal Tiger is the first release in the highly anticipated Treasures of India Collection series. The coin is the first creation by animal portraitist Veronica Mackinnon. Displayed on a patterned background, the animal is shown stealthily pacing towards the viewer on the reverse side. The text around the primary design reads ONE OUNCE CASH .999 SILVER, referencing the historic “Cash” coin denominations frequently used in Asia during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The distinctive “EIC” mintmark is placed on the lower left.
The obverse includes the effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II created by engraver Jody Clark on a laser-engraved patterned background. The text around the Queen’s portrait is surrounded by her legend ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F. D. ST HELENA, along with the denomination of ONE POUND and the year of issue 2019.
