Gold Mohur of Princely State Gwalior

Gwalior was a Princely State during the British rule in India. Today it is situated in the Indian State of Madhya Pradesh. It is the fourth largest town situated in the state of Madhya Pradesh. This city got its name from the Gwalior Fort built at the top of vast rocky massif, The Mughal Emperor Babur had called this fort as ‘’the pearl amongst the fortresses of Hind”.The ruling dynasty of Gwalior kingdom was the descendant of the Maratha chief RanojiSindhis. RanojiSindhia was the Maratha chief of the Peshwas of Poona in 1750. After the defeat of Peshwas in the Battle of Panipat by Ahmad Shah Durrani, the dominion of the State of Gwalior was completely shifted in the hands of Sindhia.
This gold mohur which weighs around 10.82g was an issue from Princely state Gwalior and was minted in Lashkar. This gold mohur was issued in the name of Mughal Emperor Muhammad Shah. The obverse of this coin is inscribed with the name and title of Mugal Emperor Muhammad Shah and the reverse of this coin is inscribed with the mint name.
