La Sardana Folk in Andorra Miniature Sheet
2020-07-17 Fri
La Sardana folk originates from Catalan culture. It is danced in a circle by men and women by holding hands and facing inwards to dance. The performance is counted as two- or three-step movements taken sideways within the circle. The direction of the steps is alternated and has jumping intervals changing with the music. The beauty of La Sardana dance form lies, as it allows people of any age and background who are familiar with the Sardana can drop their coat and bag in the centre of the circle and join in.
This dance form origin is found in the 16th century. The Spanish parliament approved unanimously after the people’s urge to promote Sardana for inclusion in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2015.
The dance form encourages harmony, brotherhood and democracy.
Herewith, the miniature sheet was issued by Andorra on 15th July 2016. It was designed by Sophie Beaujard and engraved by Sarah Bougault.
