The United States celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the National Park Service by issuing a special $1 silver coin. The federal organization was established in 1916 and looks after the maintenance of many public parks throughout the country. Yellowstone is one of the oldest part in the U.S and declared a “public park or pleasuring ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people” by Congress in 1872.

The National Park Service today has 400 sites sprawling across 84 million acres across all 50 states. The organization also holds educational programs for individuals of all ages.

As per a special act that was passed in 2014 by the Government, commemorative half dollar, silver dollar, and $5 gold coin will be released. A three-coin proof set includes proof specimens of the National Park Service Centennial silver dollar.

The obverse features a bison standing before the Old Faithful geyser at Yellowstone National Park. Other inscriptions include “LIBERTY”, “IN GOD WE TRUST” and a “1916-2016”, “P” for Philadelphia Mint and “NATIONAL PARK SERVICE CENTENNIAL”.

The reverse features a Latina Folklórico dancer with her right arm outstretched across the right obverse field. Other inscriptions include “HERITAGE * CULTURE * PRIDE”, the National Park Service logo, the coin’s face value, “$1,”, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM”.
