Teachers' Day in Peru
2020-07-06 Mon
Many countries around the world have a tradition to celebrate Teachers' Day to commemorate the work of teachers. Peru, for instance, celebrates this day on 6th July. The celebration of Teachers' Day in Peru is connected with one historic event. During the Peruvian War of Independence - that lasted from 1811 to 1821, José de San Martín became a prominent leader of the Peruvian people. After the war, he was appointed Protector of Peru and administered the country from 1821 till his death in 1850.
San Martín is known for many contributions to the establishment of independent Peru and its development. One of his earliest achievements was the foundation of the first normal school for men. The resolution for the establishment of the school was passed by another great Peruvian politician, Marquis of Torre-Tagle on July 6, 1822.
President of Peru Manuel A. Odría decided to commemorate the day of establishment of the first school that is why he designated Teachers' Day to be on July 6. This holiday was established in 1953, since then it's celebrated annually.
Peruvian Post issued in the year 1972 a stamp worth 6.50 Peruvian soles. The design of the stamp is based on a painting Teodoro Nunez Ureta which is inside the Ministry of Education. The stamp depicts the Ministry of Education.
