2020-06-22 Mon
The Nickel Liberty Head is an American 5 cent which was produced in extremely limited quantities by the United States Mint. Hence it became one of the best-known and most desirable rarities in American numismatics. It is believed that only 5 coins of this specimen exist, two are in museum and three are in a private collection. Out of which one specimen was sold for 1, 00,000 $ in 1972. Another specimen became the first to sell for over US$1 million in 1996. In 2003, another coin was sold for 3 million dollars. Once again, another piece was sold for 3.7 million in 2010. The Liberty Head Nickel, designed by Charles E. Barber, was minted from 1883 to 1913. It comprised of 75% copper and only 25% nickel. The Liberty Head Nickel is also called a ‘V Nickel’ because of the large ‘V’ on its reverse. The obverse of the coin portraits Liberty Nickel which is surrounded by stars and date is embarked below.
