The Double Eagle 20 Dollar gold coin is of United States. This was designed by Augustus Saint Gaudens in 1933. All the specimens were not circulated officially and were ordered to be melted out. However, 20 or more were rescued from the melting pot. Out of which 9 were recovered and destroyed to make it world’s rarest coin. The 2 coins are in the U.S. National Numismatic Collection, the other 10 are held in the United States Bullion Depository at Fort Knox and one is privately owned.
The obverse of the coin features ‘Liberty holding a torch and olive branch, backed by a glory’ and the reverse of the coin depicts flying bald eagle backed by a glory with the motto. The edge of the coin is lettered with E Pluribus Unum. The ratio of metal composition is 9: 1 of gold and copper respectively. It weighs 33.431 grams.
The National Collectors Mint (NCM) released gold-plated replicas of the 1933 double eagle under the authority of the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. Commonwealth in 2004. The only difference in basic design between both was the addition of the CNMI territorial seal under the U.S. motto on the reverse.
