250th Rajya Sabha Session Commemorative Coin

The 8th commemorative coin of the year 2019 saw the release on occasion to celebrate the landmark 250th session of Rajya Sabha. It's the first time Rs 250 coin was issued.The Rajya Sabha or Council of States is the upper house of the bicameral Parliament of India. It currently has a maximum membership of 245, of which 233 are elected by the legislatures of the states and union territories using single transferable votes through Open Ballot while the President can appoint 12 members for their contributions to art, literature, science, and social services.
Since, India’s independence in 1947, the government had a vision of creating a democratic infrastructure that would represent people from all walks of life and all ages. Creation of a Second Chamber was also in sync with the ideals of bicameralism. 13 May 1952, it is remembered with pride and joy as the newly constituted “Council of States” sat together for the first time.
In the year 2019, Rajya Sabha held its 250th Session which was commemorated by an Rs. 250 special coin. The coin depicts, on the obverse, National Emblem of India along with the name of the country in both Roman and Devanagari and the denomination with Rupee Symbol.
The Reverse, on the other hand, depicts a picture of parliament house with the national flag on the top and seating arrangement of the Rajya Sabha chamber along with the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi. The year of issue and the legend are also inscribed.
