2016-05-18 Wed

Since 1977, International Museum day (IMD) is held around the world every year on 18th May. Coordinated by ICOM (International Council of Museums), the International Museum Day provides an opportunity for museum professionals to serve a public platform.

This day is an occasion to raise awareness on how important museums are in the development of society and the museums of the world participate for promoting the roles of the museums.

The day is spent creating unique, enjoyable and free activities around a theme decided by ICOM. The theme of the International Museum Day 2016 will be: Museums and Cultural Landscapes.

These recent years, International Museum Day has been experiencing its highest involvement with almost 30,000 museums that organised activities in more than 120 countries.

The Post also supports this activity by issuing stamps to commemorate the event. E.g. post of Iran and Andorra has issued special commemorative stamps. Andorra has issued a stamp in 1996 with the value of 60 pence featuring Coal Iron – one of its most precious exhibits in its collection.

On the other hand the Islamic Republic of Iran has been issuing set of stamps each year which feature unique objects exhibited in various museums of Iran.
