75 years after the end of the war, Australia issued a 2 dollars C mint mark colored uncirculated coin to commemorate those who served and acknowledge the lasting impact that this conflict had on Australia. On 2 May 1945, General Helmuth Weidling, the last remaining commander of the Nazi forces defending the German capital, ordered ‘the immediate cessation of resistance’, thereby surrendering the city to the Red Army. On 2 September 1945, Japanese officials signed the documents formally surrendering to the Allied forces, and ending the Second World War.
The design of this uncirculated coin reflects the hope for peace as well as a remembrance for those who died, with four design elements: a map of the southeast Pacific and Asian region, a dove of peace, a band of colors that represent the three Australian forces, and a seven-pointed star for the Commonwealth and also for the stars that were displayed on Mother’s and Widow’s badges.
Coin’s obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II designed by Jody Clark along with the year of issue.
