Yom Ha’atzmaut (Israel Independence Day) is the national day of Israel celebrated on the 5th day of the Hebrew month of Iyar. This holiday commemorates the Israeli Declaration of Independence proclaimed by David Ben-Gurion in 1948.Jews haven’t had a homeland for many centuries since the destruction of the Second Temple. Since the existence of the earliest Jewish diaspora, many Jews have aspired to return to the “Land of Israel”. Second World War acted as a catalyst which led to the foundation of Jewish State. The state was decided to form at Palestine which was the original home of the Jews.
After the war, Palestine became the mandate of the Britain. After the withdrawal of the British, the British Mandate would be replaced by an independent Jewish state and an independent Arab state. Hence, on May 14, 1948 (5th of Iyar, 5708), eight hours before the expiration of the British Mandate of Palestine, future Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion declared the establishment of the State of Israel.
