The Madurai Sultanate is also known as Ma’bar Sultanate, It was a short-lived independent Muslim Kingdom based in the city of Madurai, today it is the part of the Indian States of Tamil Nadu. Madurai is closely associated with Tamil Language and the third Tamil Sangam age, the major congregation is said to have been held in this city. For a person that is interested in art, history, and culture, and then Madurai is a place for you to visit.This kingdom was established by Jalaluddin Ahsan Khan. In the year 1335 CE the Sultan declared his independence over Delhi Sultanate and formed this sultanate. He and his descendants ruled Madurai Sultanate until 1378 when the last sultanate of Madurai lost the battle against the forces led by Vijayanagar Empire.
This billon jital which weighs around 3.34g was issued by Mahmud Damghan Shah during his reign in Madurai Sultanate. The obverse of this coin is inscribed as ‘Muhammad ghazi Damghan shah al-sultan’. The reverse of this coin is inscribed as ‘Nasir al-Dunya wa al-Din within a circle’.
