Silver Rupee of Independent Kingdom Rohilkhand

Rohilkhand is situated in the north-western region of India. During the medieval period, it was an independent kingdom of India. Rohilkhand is named after the Afghan tribe ‘Rohilla’; ‘Roh’ means mountain and Rohilla means a mountaineer in Pashto.During the 12th Century, this region was ruled by various clans of Rajputs. Later this region came under the rule of Muslim Turkic dynasties and this region came under the rule of Delhi Sultanate, and after Delhi Sultanate the region came under the hands of Mughals.
In the year 1737, Rohilkhand was known with the name of Kuttahir. During that time it as occupied by the Afghan tribe known as Rohillas. It is believed that the Rohillas has come from the native hills of Shahdarah and had obtained a position of petty officer in the army of the Mughal Empire. Later they also occupied the higher post in the army of the Mughal Empire. When Ahmed Shah Abdali invaded in the year 1748, Ali Muhammad Khan got the control of Kuttahir and changed its name to Rohilkhand.
This silver rupee which weighs around 11.16g was issued from Rohilkhand in the name of Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II. The obverse of this coin is inscribed with the name and title of Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II. The reverse of this coin is inscribed with the mint name Anwala (Anola).
