Bharatpur was a princely state during the British rule in India; Today it is situated in the Indian states of Rajasthan. The royal house of Bharatpur traces their history back to the 11th century AD. The rulers of Bharatpur claim their descent, as Jadon Rajputs, from Sind Pal, common ancestor with the House of Karauli.The name Bharatpur is derived from the name ‘Bharat’, brother of Lord Rama. This state was founded by Suraj Mal in the year 1733. Bharatpur became increasingly associated with Maratha's ambitions. Despite their treaty ties with the East India Company, they assisted the Maratha Confederacy in their struggle against the British.
This silver rupee was issued by king Suraj Mal during his reign in Bharatpur in the name of Mughal ruler Shah Jahan III from the mint at Mahainderpur Dig. The obverse of this coin is inscribed with the name and title of Mughal ruler Shah Jahan III and the reverse of this coin is inscribed with Julus formula and Mint name.
