Baisakhi Festival marks the time for harvest of rabi crops as well as the foundation of Panth Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699. Baisakhi is one of the major festivals of Sikhs and is celebrated with lot of enthusiasm and gaiety in the state of Punjab and all throughout the world where there is a significant Sikh population. In the year 1999, the Canada Post issued a special stamp to celebrate this important festival of the Sikh community which one of the major communities in the country. One of the first Sikh groups to arrive in Canada came in 1897 as part of a British Army unit. Since then, the Sikh community has been an integral part of the Canadian society.
This stamp was issue on 19th April 1999, on the occasion of Baisakhi and comes with the denomination of 46 Canadian Cents. Designed by Stacey Zabolotney, the stamp features the Khanda, a symbol which appears on the Sikh flag.
The symbol derives its name from the double-edged sword (the Khanda) at the heart of the logo. The Khanda is a metaphor of divine knowledge, its sharp edges cleaving truth from falsehood. The name of the country and the denomination are at the top. The stamp is inscribed with both English and French.
