Princely State Alwar Silver Rupee

Alwar was a Princely State during the British rule in India; today it is located in the northeastern part of Rajasthan. Alwar was founded by the Maharaja Pratap Singh by pushing back Jats of Bharatpur.Alwar was the first princely State to use coin minted in the Calcutta mint during British Raj. Having an alliance with the British East India Company, the state was struggling against the Maratha early in the 19th Century. The state had continued to maintain a good relationship with the British till the time of Independence in 1947. In the year 1949, the state merged into Rajasthan.
This silver rupee which weighs around 11.64 g was issued by king Mangal Singh during his reign in the year in 1891 CE. The obverse side of the coin is inscribed with the bust of Queen Victoria with the legend ‘Victoria Empress’. The reverse side of the coin is inscribed with ‘Maharao Rajah Sawai Mangal Singh Bahadur’.
