Latvia is a country on the Baltic Sea between Lithuania and Estonia. Latvia was declared an independent Republic on 18 November 1918 in the midst of World War I. Latvia enjoyed a short period of peace till 17 June 1940, when the Soviet power was re-established in Latvia.

Latvia is a high-income advanced economy and a full member of the Eurozone. It began using the euro as its currency on 1 January 2014, replacing the Latvian Lats. The lats were first introduced on 3 August 1922, replacing the Latvian rubles and was subdivided into 100 Santini.

The First Lat banknote of Latvia aka the first Independent Banknote was issued in the year 1923. This Green-blue banknote was issued with the denomination of 100 Latu or lats. The banknote shows a series of intricate designs on both obverse and the reverse.

The obverse of the banknote depicts the promissory note in the centre with the denomination in words flanked by the denomination in numerals in a decorative vignette. The note depicts a decorative border with number 100 five times. The Year of the issue is in the centre at the bottom.

The reverse of the coin depicts two seated women in national costume in the centre with the coat of arms in the middle and a house, factories, trees and leaves in the background.
