Royal Mint Celebrates William Wordsworth's 250th Birth Anniversary

William Wordsworth, an English Romantic poet, is being honoured by Royal Mint on a 5 pounds Silver Proof Coin. This special edition coin is being issued to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the Birth of the English Poet.

Wordsworth was born on 7 April 1770. Growing up near the Lake District in England, he beaceme one of the most popular poets to have written in the English language. His ode to love and joy, ‘I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud’, commonly known as ‘Daffodils’, is amongst the nation’s favourites. Credited since the beginning of the English Romantic period in literature, his collaboration with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Lyrical Ballads, broke new ground stylistically.

This special coin was designed by artist David Lawrence. The coin features on the reverse, the lines taken from Wordsworth’s celebrated poem, ‘Lines Written a few miles above Tintern Abbey’ which are woven them into a design showcasing the magnificent scenery that inspired him.

Wordsworth’s most famous line, ‘I wandered lonely as a cloud’, is included as an edge inscription on the coin. The obverse of the coin depicts bears the Jody Clark portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2020 year date, weight, denomination, and purity.
