Menachem Begin died today

Menachem Begin, Belarusian-Israeli politician, 6th Prime Minister of Israel, and Nobel Prize laureate passed away on 9th March 1992. He was active in both the movement to establish an independent Jewish State in Palestine and in the early Israeli government.

Begin was born in Brest-Litovsk, Poland, to Zeev Dov and Hassia Begin. He was educated at the Mizrachi Hebrew School and later studied law at the University of Warsaw, Poland. Begin had witnessed many acts of violence against Jews in Europe.

Active in the Zionist movement, he became the leader of the Polish branch of the Betar youth moment, dedicated to the establishment of a Jewish state on both sides of Jordan River. Begin’s most significant achievement as Prime Minister was the signing of a peace treaty with Egypt in 1979, for which he and Anwar Sadat (President of Egypt) shared the Nobel Prize for Peace.

To honor him Belarus Postage Stamp has issued commemorative postage stamp of value2.50 Israeli new shekel. It depicts the portrait of Begin in foreground and Menachem Begin Heritage Centre (The official state memorial commemorating Menachem Begin) in the background.
