The final stamp of series- Arctic desert

2020-03-07 Sat

Greenland post started a short stamp series about the wonders of the Greenlandic Arctic dessert last year. This stamp is the second and last stamp of the series, it features Arctic dessert located near the international airport in Kangerlussuaq. The dessert warps around the world and spreads 200 km.

This stamp illustrates the rocky dessert while depicting some of the vegetation that manages to live in this very dry climate. In the background of the stamp, the massive ice cap is towering almost blocking the sky.

This dessert was found in World War II by the American. They wanted a suitable area in the Arctic to establish airfield and military base. Its stable climate and dessert are proved to be the most suitable area for an airfield. When the military operation ceased in the area it became a civilian airport.
