The period from 1835 to 1947 is marked as the Uniform Coinage of India. Before 1835 The East India Company issued coins from three presidencies namely Madras, Bombay, and Bengal. All these presidencies use to mint coins with the name and title of Mughal Emperors. All these coins were different in names, weight, diameter purity and denomination. Due to this monetary system was very confusing and chaotic. To face all this challenge the introduction of Uniform Coinage was introduced in India. The 1861 pattern dies had some problems and shortcomings. In light of this Royal Mint of England prepared new dies and punches and they arrived in India in 1863. In the minting of 1862 Rupees, some material amongst these items was used.
The silver Rupee with the date 1862 was struck at Bombay mint. The obverse of this coin depicts the bust of Queen Victoria facing towards left with a dividing legend VICTORIA QUEEN. The reverse of the coin is inscribed with ONE RUPEE INDIA 1862.
